The new functions of a sundial

by CCWeathervanes 10. October 2011 18:28

When doing a quick online search for "how a sundial works", we see pages and pages of resources explaining how the sun casts its shadow on a gnomon and a dial that are strategically positioned (towards true celestial north) on earth to tell approximate time.  But really, we don't need sundials to tell time anymore.

Why, then, are sundials still as common as they are?  Unlike other ancient tools (such as the abacus) that have been replaced by improved technological models, sundials are still found in their original settings -- in gardens, on pedestals, in the center of courtyards...  They must serve some function in order to have reserved such prominent spots in our lives.  YES, they do!

What we do need sundials for is to add sophistication to our outside spaces.  We need them to inspire a sense of perspective as we go about our modern and chaotic lives.

Think of the last time you spent time looking at a sundial.  Think of what was around you.  What did you think about?  I can almost guarantee that you didn't contemplate the busy day you had planned, or remember everything that you had to do before a big meeting.

We need sundials to serve as conversation pieces, as combo bird baths, and as thoughtful and unique gifts for friends and family members.  These are the new functions of a sundial.  If they happen to also tell you whether it's 10 AM or 2 PM, that is an added bonus.  (But if you don't already know the difference between 10 and 2, it's probably intentional on your part, and bravo to you!)

We've recently added new sundials to our store, you can view the entire category here, or check out the unique favorites that we've posted below.  If you haven't spent time pondering life while gazing at a sundial lately, we invite you to try one out.  Enjoy!

Fall is on its way...

by CCWeathervanes 9. September 2011 22:11

Summer may be unofficially over (see the above photo of the crowded de-boarding platform of the Nantucket Ferry in Hyannis!) but there is still plenty of outside weather left in the season.  We've just added some new sundials (click here) that will instill a sense of nostalgia as you sit and watch the time pass in the cooler autumn air.  And have you seen our new Rain Chains (click here)?  These make absolutely beautiful sounds as rain water trickles through them.  No longer will you curse the rain!  Free Shipping on most orders!

If you have a Sundial or Rain Chain installed on your property, we'd love to see photos!  With your permission we'll post them here so you can show off to more than just your neighborhood.
